Looking for books written by and about POC people? You won’t get better than Decentred Lits subscription boxes.
The Jamaica based box service was founded last year by three bad ass women, Kaymara Barrett, Bibliophile & Earth Bender, Stacy-Ann Hayles, Web Design Nerd and Internet Whisperer and Gizelle Fletcher, Founder of the For Colored Girls Book Club.
The main aim of this book club according to CEO & Lead Curator Kaymara Barrett, is to upend the largely white publishing world and help their members “diversify their book shelves.”
“Globally publishing is so white, so most of the books we read is usually written by white authors. We wanted to take the gaze away from those white authors and instead centre the experiences of people who look like us, we wanted to decenter literature…”
But’s it’s not just about books, it’s also about sparking conversations in our community, conversations that may sometimes be painful. So, each month there is a theme that is explored and the contents of the surprise box includes curated books and tokens from that theme written and created by the POC community all in beautifully and thoughtfully packaged using eco-friendly material.
The combination of books, tokens and conversation is how the women at Decentred Lit are using their platform to actively create a space for POC and especially Caribbean writers and creators to shine.
